Drinking four cups of coffee or more a day can halve the risk of gout in women.
Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world and may affect the risk of gout via various mechanisms. To study the relation between coffee intake and the risk of gout, researchers followed 89,433 American female nurses for 26 years. Health and dietary habits of all the participants were monitored. During the follow up, 896 nurses developed gout.
There was an inverse association between higher coffee intake and the risk of gout. It was found that those who consuming large amounts of coffee over a long period of time were least prone to the risk of developing gout. Women who drank four cups of coffee or more were 57 per cent less likely to suffer from a gout attack than those who drank none. Two to four cups lowered the chances of gout by about 22 per cent but one cup of coffee a day lowered the risk of gout by three per cent.
The study suggests that long-term coffee consumption is associated with a lower risk of gout in women.
