A firm handshake - a sign of confidence, could also signal that you will have a long life.
Physical capability is a term used to describe a person's ability to do the physical tasks of everyday living. To examine the associations of grip strength, walking speed, chair rise time, and standing balance performance with mortality, researchers followed 53, 476 adults from 33 countries aged 18 to more than 80 years and measured the firmness of the grip of the participants. Other tests of physical capability, including tests of walking speed (slow and fast), chair-rising and standing balance, were also conducted in participants aged 60 years and older.
It was found that a link between grip strength and survival could be seen in younger as well as older adults. Participants in the slowest group of walking speed had higher mortality rates than did those in the fastest group and poorer performance in standing balance tests was associated with higher mortality rates.
The study suggests that our grip strength, the speed of walking or getting up from a chair and our ability to balance are the possible indicators of how long we may live, and could be useful tools for identifying older people at higher risk of death.
