SItuated on the Ring Road, right opposite to the All India Institure of Medical Sciences, Safdarjung is one of the largest government hospitals in the country. With as many as 1600 beds, this government medical facility dates back in 1942 which was taken over by the Government of India under the Ministry of Health. This multi-speciality government facility is now capable enough to offer medical and healthcare facilities not only to Delhiites but also to natives of other states and countries. The hospital continues to upgrade its therapeutic and diagnostic aspects from time to time to offer higher and better facilities to patients. In 1962, this hospital became the centre of training and teaching for Post-graduate students of the University of Delhi. Later, from 1973 to 1990, the hospital faculty also engaged with the University College of Medical Sciences.
