Will my father get back his vision?
Q: My father, aged 69 years, was operated with laser for cataract, which failed leading to immense bleeding internally. This resulted in another manual operation 6 months back, but in vain. He says the vision is blurred and now he has to be operated again for removal of some oil. We are quite confused. Could you please guide us and give some direction? Will my father get his vision back?
A:I am sorry about his condition. There is something wrong in what you have gathered. LASER is not used for cataract surgery, it is either ultrasound or fluidics or manual. If there is oil in the eye, then he has undergone a Vitrectomy procedure. There are many conditions in the eye to, which this surgery is needed, including diabetic eye complications. Please talk to your doctor and get the full information. Silicone oil by and large needs to be removed from the eye, at some point of time, if it gives raise to either Glaucoma or corneal damage. About the vision, it depends upon the health of the retina & optic nerve, after all these procedures. Your doctor is the best judge to inform you.
