Why has the skin on my daughter's tongue come off?

Q: My 3-year-old daughter's tongue is reddish, as the top layer skin has come off. Therefore she is not interested in eating anything. Why has the skin of the tongue come off? Which medicines have to be given to her?

A:In glossitis, tongue may be congested and red and may be painful. It may be localised to small area or involving whole of the tongue. When it is over a wider area it may be due to allergy to some food item or even a very hot drink can cause this. If it subsides in a week's time, nothing needs to be done. If it persists other systemic causes need to be ruled out for which you need to see a doctor.
