Why has my wife gained so much weight during pregnancy?
Q: My wife is 29 weeks pregnant. My concern is about her weight. She has gained 16 kg already. Her pre-pregnancy weight was 66 kg and now she is 82 kg. She goes for one-hour walk everyday at night and she follows some diet plan also. What should she do to keep her weight in control? Is this weight normal?
A:From what you tell me, her weight gain has been quite significant but her gynaecologist will be able to assess if it is normal, taking all her other parameters into account. She has to realize that while being pregnant, other than eating a wholesome nutritious meal, there is bound to be a weigh gain that can not be greatly reversed, until after the baby is born. One suggestion that might help is to walk at least 2 hours before meals, rather than after, for health benefits Although an after dinner walk will help to settle the food down and in her getting a good nights sleep, it should not be undertaken for weight reduction.
