Why has my wife been asked to take Profasi?

Q: My 31 years old wife had her last menstrual period (LMP) two months back. She was taking Sulphasalazine for joint pains 45 days back. She conceived around the same time normally without any medication, however, my sperm count was low. I was advised ZY 10 forte and Maxoza and after two months of medication, my wife got pregnant. Now, the doctor has advised her Susten and Vomilast. The doctor will start giving her injection Profasi 5000 from the eighth week. She has asked for an ultrasound and a Doppler test also. Why has my wife been asked to take Profasi? Is she on the right treatment?

A:Profasi is HCG injection. It is usually given for ovulation and for luteal support. It has no ill effect on baby. I do not understand why the doctor wants to give Profasi from 8th week. I usually give Susten instead of Profasi as it resembles natural progesterone and no injection needs to be taken. But Susten needs to be started immediately after pregnancy is diagnosed and provided there is documented or high chance of having luteal defect.
