Why does my nose bleed when I lie prone on my face?

Q: I am a 63 years old male. My nose starts bleeding when I lie prone on my face. This happens when I do Sashtanga Namaskaar (prone position with face down). The bleeding stops once I get up. My doctor gave me antihistamines and a course of antibiotics. But it hasn't helped. Is it serious? How can this be treated?

A:When you put your head down and that too prone, the whole head neck area becomes engorged with blood. Any small weak and fragile nose vessel will open up and bleed. This is a warning to you from the nose that the pressure is too much to handle and hence it leaks to ease the congestion. Please try some other position in yoga than this. There is no need for medications. Opening of vessels can also lead to serious accidents sometimes.
