Why does my mouth open while sleeping?

Q: When I sleep, my mouth automatically opens. I keep it closed when I go to sleep. I have this problem since my childhood. Secondly, I can't breath properly if an incence stick or mosquito coil is lit or when it's very smoky. I don't have asthma. How can I correct this problem?

A:Sleep disorders are best solved by sleep studies carried out by a trained ear, nose and throat/chest specialists. The disorder may require a surgical procedure or dental attention. Some people require a special device called CPAP, but the value of this is quite variable. Sensitivity to bad or even good food smells that are strong such as incense smoke is common, but so is sensitivity to air pollution. The issue is one for environmentalists, not physicians.
