Why does my child always feel hungry and gain weight?

Q: My son is 8 years old and of late he takes more food as well as snacks. He finds himself always hungry (all the time). In parallel, he keeps putting on weight. We make him run or play with his friends but soon he find himself tired and to be specific he is not much interested in playing as well. Is there a way where we can put control on the above things?

A:I think we would need to rule out thyroid and other endocrine problems in your child, which could result in increased hunger and decreased activity. Its also important to see that when your child is hungry, he should avoid eating high calorie foods, like burgers, pizzas, cheese, chips, chocolates, ice-creams, sweets etc. Instead you should encourage him to have light soups, salads, sprouted grains, fruits and vegetables. You therefore need to consult an endocrinologist, preferably a paediatric endocrinologist.
