Why am I losing proteins in urine?
Q: I am a 30 years old man and have been a subject to repeated kidney infections and reflux since childhood. My right kidney is totally damaged and has shrunk due to constant reflux and multiple infections. My left kidney was comparatively better but now has reflux as well. I am also spilling protein though my blood test last year showed my creatinine levels to be normal. What is the problem with me? I have been seeing many physicians. Should I consult a specialist for my problem?
A:You have what is called ‘reflux nephropathy’ which results from reflux of urine into ureter and kidney in early childhood. There is scarring and damage to kidneys with repeated urinary tract infections. You should see a nephrologist to assess the degree of kidney damage, decrease or prevent further loss and have drugs to decrease protein creatinine in urine.
