Why am I facing difficulty in urinating after a kidney transplant?

Q: I am a 23 years old boy who had a kidney transplant 7 months back. Now I get no sense of urination and when I go to urinate, I have to put pressure to pass the urine. How can it be treated? Please help.

A:Bladder evacuation function is independent of kidney function. Many patients, while on dialysis prior to transplantation, produce very little urine. It may alter the bladder functioning but gets automatically corrected over a period of time after the bladder recycling starts. Some of the causes of bladder dysfunction like neurogenic bladder may have caused renal failure too. Some diseases like prostatic enlargement may affect evacuation independent of the renal function or transplantation status. You need to see a Urologist who would assess you for your bladder functional status before advising the remedial action.
