When will the grommet come out of my ear?

Q: I am a 41 years old man who has been operated for grommet insertion and the grommet is still in that ear. I was suffering from buzzing sound in both my ears and hearing loss in one of the ears. After the operation the buzzing sound problem got over but now I have mild high frequency hearing loss in the ear for, which was operated. I have no hearing loss and can hear properly from the other ear. Can I recover from the hearing loss and hear properly? When will the grommet come out?

A:Grommets usually come out on their own in 6 to 9 months time. As regards hearing loss, recovery depends on the type of hearing loss. If it is sensorineural (affecting the inner ear), it may be hard to expect recovery. If however, it is conductive (affecting the middle ear), treatment may be possible. A hearing test will give you that information.
