When should one go in for surgery for appendicitis?

Q: My husband is reported to have appendicitis. He has slight pain on the right side of the lower abdomen. The doctor has prescribed medicines for 5 days. These are Sigma CT - 10 tabs, Cataspa - 10 tabs and Nexpro 20 mg - 10 tabs, taking since 3 days. Please advise if he is on the right medication and what other treatment can he undergo if he is positive for appendicitis. Is surgery a must and what is the best time to undergo the surgery and also let me know if there is any other alternative to surgery in Bangalore.

A:If the diagnosis is appendicitis it is probably mild since they have not advised surgery immediately. He is now on antibiotics which is the correct treatment. If the ultrasound confirms that it was an attack of appendicitis, the best time to do it is after about six weeks electively. It is relatively a minor procedure and can be done by any surgeon.
