What is the use of Diabeta SR?

Q: I am a 65 years old man who has been prescribed Diabeta SR 1 gm. Why has it been prescribed? Is it an alternative for Diabetrol 1 gm?

A:Diabeta SR contains slow release metformin 1g while Diabetorol contains two immediate release medicines: Glibenclamide 5 mg and metformin 500 mg. One should avoid taking combination medicines such as Diabeterol since the dose of individual components cannot be adjusted. For example, if a patient needs glibenclamide 5 mg per day and metformin 1000 mg per day, then Diabeterol cannot be used. One tablet will be too little and two tablets will be too much. It is always better to take medicines individually and separately rather than in combination forms.
