What is the reason for streaks of blood in a child's stools?

Q: My son is 5 months old and gets streaks of blood in his stools. We have been noticing this since he was 3 months old. His motion is greenish, watery and foamy with mucous at times. A stool culture was done and nothing seemed wrong. Is this something we need to be concerned about? Please advise.

A:Presence of streaks of blood in stool is not supposed to be normal. Please rule out an anal fissure, or GERD (gastro-oesophageal reflux disease)or milk protein allergy. First confirm presence of blood in stool on routine microscopy. Then consult a paediatric gastroenterologist for further evaluation.
