What is the reason for pain in the arms?

Q: I have problems with my arms. Whenever I move my right arm, it hurts up to my shoulder. I have no strength. It started with pain in my right hand. The pain is so intense that it wakes me up at night. I got a brace from my hand and got x-rays but nothing was found. Now it has moved to my arms and shoulders. Please advise.

A:As your pain started in the hands, it may be due to a trapped nerve at the wrist (median nerve). This can radiate into the forearm and shoulder. Alternatively, you may also be having cervical spondylosis. The diagnosis is by clinical means and can be confirmed by an EMG.
