Q: I had a positive pregnancy test after 2 days of a normal period. During that time I had some back pain and the doctor started hormone tablets everyday. Now after one week there is slight bleeding (more like black dark spots) and the test is still positive. What is the possibility of a miscarriage? I have a past history of miscarriage.

A:It is very difficult to give exact risk of a miscarriage. If the bleeding is not due to some local lesion in the vagina or cervix (mouth of uterus) like a small polyp, then the chances of miscarriage are slightly higher than the general population. I suppose your doctor has performed a speculum examination on you to rule out local causes- this is very important. Hope for the best- no point worrying in advance as it does not help.
