What is the cause for recurrent diarrhoea in children?

Q: My son, who is 2 years and 3 months old, frequently suffers from diarrhoea, gastroenteritis etc. i.e. there is a problems with his digestive system. I find that due to intake of allopathic medicines constantly, his immune system has become weak. Please advise?

A:Your son who is developing recurrent diarrhoea should be looked into why he is developing this again and again. Is he bottle fed which may be the cause? Does he have any protein allergy or is he suffering from some type of intestinal disorder resulting in recurrent diarrhoea or malabsorption? How is his overall growth? I think you need to see a paediatric gastroenterologist who should be able to investigate and address your son's problems. Most of these recurrent episodes of diarrhoea may not be infections and giving repeated courses of antibiotics or other antidiarrhoeal medications is not the answer. Please get him evaluated.
