What is the best contraceptive device after delivery?

Q: I am 28 years old and gave birth to a baby boy a month back through c-section. When is it safe for the newborn to travel in flights? My doctor has advised me to take a contraceptive injection on my next visit to the hospital. She said it has to be continued once in 80 days. My mother is advising me to fix a loop. My friends are advising to take pills. Which is the best contraceptive advice you would give, given that we are not planning for our next baby for another 3 years.

A:Regarding when your baby can travel - consult your paediatrician. Regarding contraception - some people manage very well with the condom - no interference with the body metabolism. Injection is OK - given every 2 months (NET-OEN) or every 3 months - (depo-Provera). This injection can lead to irregular spotting and even no menses. Return of fertility is long after stopping injection - anywhere from 3 to 4 months or even 1 year. Combined oral contraceptive pills taken after baby is 6 months of age is good - as return of fertility is fast. You must ensure there are no contraindications for these medicines. I do not advise a loop after c-section ; but it can be inserted after 1 c-section - preferably after 6 months.
