What is Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD)?
Q: My wife aged 41 is on haemodialysis since past 3.5 years. Now the doctor has advised us to go for Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD). This is in light of the fact that the veins of her AV fistula need repair surgery. Please advise.
A:CPAD is a good alternative to hemodialysis. In fact any patient of kidney failure should look at options of CAPD and haemodialysis as complementary modalities of treatment. One could start with CAPD and if there is a problem with it then move to hemodialysis. One could start with hemodialysis & then move to CAPD. Those who have donors can include transplant also in this and one can move from one to another depending on various needs at different time frames. Your nephrologists can look at all pros and cons of each modality and in your case for CAPD.
