Is it normal to menstruate twice in a month?

Q: Is it normal to menstruate twice in a month? For the past two months I have been having this. My menstrual cycle is long (40 day cycle). At the time I am expecting to ovulate, I bleed for about 3-4 days. My normal menstrual periods last between 4-7 days. I want to know if it is normal or not? What is causing it? I would also like to know the days when I am most fertile? What precautions can I take?

A:Ovulation occurs about mid-cycle between periods. For you this will be about day 20 and you will be most fertile for the subsequent 7-10 days after ovulation. Bleeding at midcycle for 3-4 days is not normal and may indicate hormonal imbalance or other uterine problems. I strongly recommend you see a doctor - gynaecologist or endocrinologist.
