Is it advisable to take half a tablet of Escitalopram oxalate?

Q: I am a 41 years old man taking Escitalopram oxalate for the last few months. I started it with 10 mg and slowly reduced it to 5 mg. Now I plan to further reduce it to 2.5 mg but the tablet is not available in the market; so I decided to take half of 5 mg. Is it advisable to take the broken tablet?

A:Please check the tablet of Escitalopram. If it is scored (i.e. there is line in the middle), then you can break it into two and take the half. Generally, the active medicine is well distributed in the tablet; hence breaking it into two is acceptable. It is good that you are reducing the dose of this drug that has many side effects.
