Is it advisable to take curcumin supplements?

Q: My dad is 68 years old. He has just started Lenalidomide treatment for multiple myeloma. I have read about the beneficial effects of Curcumin C3 Complex. Would it be advisable if he starts on curcumin supplements (NFkB Zero by Sami Labs) along with this therapy? Or is there any other alternative to strengthen his immune system? Also he had to stop treatment for two months before he started Lenalidomide. Could that have aggravate his multiple myeloma?

A:Lenalidomide along with dexamethasone is the rational and accepted treatment of multiple myeloma. Curcumin C3 Complex contains substances from plant sources such as turmeric root, black pepper fruit etc. It is not a medicine but a supplement. Its safety and efficacy is not required to be established the way drugs are tested. Hence there is no scientifically valid and acceptable literature on the results of controlled clinical trials. I am unable to give views on this and similar supplements that are promoted though Internet. No supplements are required with standard treatment for multiple myeloma.
