Is Cerazette - an oral contraceptive pill safe while breast feeding?
Q: Is Cerazette - Oral Contraceptive Pill safe enough to take while brest feeding a baby of 5 months?
A:Cerazette is a brand name that contains a medicine called desogestral - a progestogen. Desogestral is excreted in human milk in very small quantities: 0.01-0.5mcg per kilo per day. Assuming an infant is taking 150ml of mothers milk, some hormone will enter the babys system. Hence the babys developmental progress will have to be watched. There is no regulatory prohibition for nursing mother to take desogestral but why take even a small risk? Baby's welfare should overide all other considerations.
