Is a hand/finger transplant possible?
Q: My sister lost two fingers of her right hand as they got crushed by the machine. Is it possible to fit artificial fingers or is there any way to fit another persons finger? What are the best solutions to achieve normal functionality of the fingers, how much does it cost and where can we get it done?
A:Only a few hand transplants (from one person to another) have been done. To my knowledge, there have been only 1 or 2 successes worldwide; therefore transplant is not an option today. Doctors are mainly concerned with function. If function in the hand has been affected, your surgeon will advise you the best way to manage that. There are several options, which are difficult to describe here. Orthopaedic surgeons, hand specialists, and even plastic surgeons manage these cases. Before you finally decide to accept any option advised by your orthopaedic surgeon/ hand surgeon, take another opinion.
