Q: Two months back my father, 68 years, had a heart attack. The main artery was fully blocked. So I got angioplasty done immediately and two stents were put. It cost us 2.5 lacs. He has high BP and uric acid (prostate) problem. BP 140/80 Uric Acid 6.8 to 7.0 Hemoglobin 13.2. He is under medication for swelling in legs (below knee, near ankle and toe); dizziness, giddiness, wooziness, vomiting, nausea, etc. and severe pain in legs. Doctor got Holter and Doppler test done. They were normal. Now he is taking the following medicines and I want to know about the function and basic salts of these 10 medicines: Aten 25 mg, Cardace 2.5 mg, Noklot 75 mg, Ecosprin 75 mg, Zyloric 100 mg, Vertin 16 mg, Ondem 4 mg, Creval 20 mg, Rentex 150 mg. Kindly tell me all about these medicines, their properties and their salts.
A:The salt name (chemical name or generic name) is always printed on the strip of the brand. You can check from various strips. However I am giving the required information below: Aten is the brand name; it contains a medicine called atenolol - used to control blood pressure, angina and heart beat abnormalities. Cardace is the brand name; it contains a medicine called ramipril - used to control blood pressure. Noklot is the brand name; it contains a medicine called clopidogerl - meant for thinning the blood and preventing coronary syndrome. It is generally taken along with aspirin. Ecopsrin is the brand name of aspirin. Vertin is the brand name; it contains a medicine called betahistine - used to control vertigo. Ondem is the brand name; it contains a medicine called ondansetron - indicated to control nausea and vomiting in patients getting anti-cancer therapy. It is not approved for routine use in non-cancer patients. Zyloric is the brand name of allopurinol which is given to prevent the uric acid (gout) from increasing. A to Z is a preparation of multivitamins. Its utility is doubtful. Multivitamins are indicated only if there is proven deficiency. Creval is the brand name; it contains a medicine called valdecoxib - used to control pain in musculo-skeletal disorders (bones and joint pain). It should be given to elderly with great caution since it can cause stomach ulcers, affect liver adversely and increase blood pressure. We cannot locate the brand name Rentex on the databank of major manufacturers. If you let us know the name of medicine it contains, we will be happy to respond.
