I have diabetes, can I do body building?

Q: I am 32 years old male. I was well build, until I was diagnosed a year ago for type 2 diabetes and recently for hypothyroidism. I take oral medication for both. My blood sugar levels are under control. I want to know whether it is possible for me to lift weights & build my body again?

A:You would have to consult with both your specialists for the same. You may like to get their opinion after they have closely evaluated your case. After that, if you get the go-ahead, you can take alternate measures to get back to exercise BUT do so VERY carefully. Instead of reaching a goal of BIG body, think now of a fit body, which you can achieve with free-hand exercises. This way you can work out the whole body with your body weight and not have the additional risk of handling weights that may be unsafe in your condition. Consult a good fitness trainer to show you the following:

  • Push-ups
  • Pull- ups
  • Abdominal - oblique crunches
  • Back extensions
  • Squats and lunges
That should more or less take care of your complete body muscle work. Add some brisk walking / cycling / swimming and some stretches after all the exercises and you can see yourself closer to your goal.
