I am visionless in one eye, what is the best career option for me?

Q: I am 18 years old and I am visionless in the right eye. I am currently doing Civil Engineering. I am trying for ECE or EEE or Biotech or Biomedical through other competitive exams. So, I would like to know which of the above courses including Civil is strainful for me while studying and also in future, which would you think is safe and best for me?

A:You have not told what was the cause of loss of vision of the right eye, as it would have a bearing on the left eye in some situations. If it was due to an injury in the childhood it should not affect the left eye now. Normally working with one eye does not lead to eye strain, except psychologically. So relax on that front. You should be aware that for Govt jobs as also Railways etc you might be made unfit due to one eyed blindness. The handicap because of one eye blindness is only 30 % and unfortunately that does not give you the reservation benefit either. So keep that in mind when you apply or of course choose to be self employed. In that situation avoid a job where there is a risk of injury to the left eye.
