How will the undescended testis affect my son's fertility?

Q: My son's testicles never descended into his scrotal sac, since birth. He is 6 years old now. What are his chances of becoming sterile? The doctors never noticed or cared about it. He complains of pain in the leg every now and then. Please advise.

A:I think this needs early attention by a paediatric surgeon. The testes must be located and brought down into the scrotum. With undescended testes on both sides, fertility is reduced by about 30% but it does not necessarily mean that your son will be infertile. He needs early surgery to prevent further damage to the testes.
