How to treat viral infection in children?

Q: My 11 months old daughter is suffering from cold cough and fever since last 4-5 days.I went to doctor and he gave some medicines. One of them was probably Zinette to cure infection, when I tried to give this to daughter she vomitted. Afterwards I found it was very bitter in taste. Then I gave it mixed with mango juice but she again vomitted. She is now not ready to take any medicine despite much of cajoling from us. The fever is on and off but cough is persisting. Pls suggest some better medicine, sweet in taste to cure cold virus. We are giving Soolan cough syrup for cough and brufen syrup when she has fever.

A:Your baby is suffering from a viral infection that will go away with time, usually 7-10 days. The fever will settle down earlier but the cough may persist for 2 weeks. For fever you may continue with brufen syrup or simply paracet amol syrup (crocin, calpol). If the cough is troublesome you may give Syp. Triominic 3ml thrice daily. Put Nasoclear nose drops in both nostrils to keep the air passages open.
