How safe is dialysis for my mother?

Q: My Mother is suffering from kidney failure and is on dialysis from last month. I want to know how safe dialysis is and also if we go for a transplant then how safe will that be? I have heard that the immune system of the body causes problems in adopting the kidney and the medicines used to suppress has also some side effects. I also want to know whether Immune Pre Conditioning technique (claimed by a doctor from Chennai) and Educating Immune System (claimed by another doctor) are still in research phase or in clinical phase?

A:In case her treating doctor feels that she is medically fit to undergo kidney transplantation, then that remains the best mode of treatment for her even though there will be the risk of the body rejecting the transplanted kidney and the medicines having significant side effects. Out of the two modalities i.e. dialysis( Haemo/Peritoneal) and transplantation available for a patient with end stage kidney failure the latter, wherever feasible, is more likely to give a better quality and longevity of life. Regarding the new techniques, they seem to be very promising, but more time is required before they become clinically more widely acceptable.
