How long will bone marrow contusion take to heal?

Q: I am a 45 years old man, had a bone marrow contusion in the lateral tibial condyle, along with sprain in the LCL (due to an accident). How long will it take to heal? What are the precautions to be taken?

A:Healing time for bone marrow contusion may take any where from 3 to 6 weeks. The sprains of ligaments may be of different grades. The healing time depends on the severity of the sprain. Grade 1 tear has few fibres of the ligament torn. Grade 2 sprain has several fibres torn. In a Grade 3 sprain there is a complete tear of the ligament. Complete tears may require surgical intervention. The earliest time for these to heal is also about 3-6 weeks. However, often these are very painful and pain may last for long time. So it may be possible that even after the stipulated period for healing you may not get back to normal activity.
