How do I get rid of recurrent urinary tract infections?

Q: I am a 28 years old female, got married a year back. Since then, I have been suffering from recurrent Urinary tract infections (UTI). My gynaecologist has prescribed me Nitrofurantoin Mon (100 mg). I still experience burning sensation in vagina while passing urine, pain in lower abdomen after sex, smelly urine and get smelly creamy discharge from vagina. The urologist has told me that I have bladder inflammation problem. I am confused as to what the problem is. Please help.

A:The symptoms of burning sensation in vagina while passing urine, pain in lower abdomen after sex, smelly urine, smelly creamish discharge that you have described are indicative of an inflammatory disorder in pelvis. Fungal vaginal infections, chronic cervicitis, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and endometriosis are some of the diseases apart from chronic urinary infection that can cause such symptoms. A detailed history including menstrual history, physical examination, urine test, test of the vaginal discharge as well as some imaging investigations like ultrasound of the lower abdomen and pelvis would be the initial investigations that may indicate the future course of further work up before a cause can be pin-pointed and treatment recommended.
