How can pus formed at the site of stitches be treated?

Q: I am a 27 years old man who had hernia and got operated for the same. But after a month, pus has formed on the site of the stitches. The doctor has opened the stitches and now there is a continuos flow of pus. Please advise.

A:After a hernia, if pus forms (this happens in about 1% of cases), the pus usually clears up with dressings. It may take long, because the doctor inserts a mesh, which can delay the clearing up process. Sometimes the mesh has to be removed. This will be necessary in about 5% of cases. My suggestion is to do repeat dressings and be patient.
