How can prostate cancer be treated?

Q: My 61 years old father has an increased prostate specific antigen (PSA) level, He underwent biopsy and was diagnosed with prostate cancer. How safe is the treatment for the same? What are the chances of survival in prostate cancer surgery?

A:It is not clear from your query, which stage of prostate cancer is the patient suffering from. Early stage prostate cancer can be very effectively treated with either radical surgery or radical radiation therapy, preferably IGRT. If the disease has spread outside the prostate either locally or at distant sites (metastasis), then radical surgery or radical radiotherapy are not the treatment of choice and the patient is treated with other modalities of treatment like hormonal therapy etc. In early stage disease the chances of cure are excellent.
