How can my fatty liver be treated?

Q: I am a 47 years old man and recently had an abdominal ultrasound and a blood test done in which fatty liver (grade II) with hepatomegaly was found; but no other sonographic abnormality was detected. Liver size is 16 cm with increased echotexture and echogenicity. I feel mild pain in the left lower side of abdomen, which is not concentrated at a particular place. My LDL cholesterol level is 140 mg/dl, blood sugar is 110/160 mg/dl. My height is 165 cm and weight is 66 kg. I am taking Gluconorm, Piogit, Aztor, Isabgol powder. Please advise.

A:Fatty liver is a common condition. No drug has been approved for its treatment. The best approach is to do the following:

  • Maintain your weight at normal level, based on your height.
  • Regular exercise (e.g., brisk walk for 1/2 hr, 4-5 times a week)
  • Maintain your blood glucose and lipid levels within the normal range.
