Heart - homocysteine

Q: Is homocysteine a risk factor for CVD?

A:There are a number of studies linking a high level of homocysteine with increased susceptibility to heart disease, though the guidelines as to who should get a homocysteine estimation done are not clear cut. However it is advisable to get it done, especially there is a history of early onset coronary heart disease in the family. Homocysteine levels can often be reduced after appropriate dietary/ vitamin B intervention.
