Does my child need a tetanus shot after an injury?

Q: My son got his Tetanus vaccine when 18 months old. Now he is 3 years old. He fell down on the road and got bruises. This happened twice and he hurt the same knee before the previous injury could heal. My question is - does he require a TT injection again? If not, then when should he get the next routine dose of vaccine?

A:No, the child does not require a shot of TT now as he is already protected by the dose of DPT given at 18 months. This protection will last till the age of five years, when the DPT booster will be due, and after that the protection will wane off in five years, which can be prevented by giving a shot of TT after every five years.
