Does hypothyroidism affect pregnancy?
Q: I was checked for hypothyroid in October and was put on medication (thyroxine 100 mcg). After 4 mths i again took the tests which showed my thyroxine level was absolutely normal . I have to take the tests again after 6 mths . Now we r planning for pregnancy ..... so i am very much worried whether there will be any problem or can the thyroxine level again drop by itself . I am a housewife . plz kindly answer my Query ... Thanking You Madhu
A:1. You can safely plan pregnancy. 2. During pregnancy the requirement of thyroxin increases every month or so and the dose has to be incresed every 4-6 weeks. The TSH values are normally very low in pregnancy and the T4 values are high. Therefore get only FT4 and TSH done, consult endocrinologists who correctly understand the problem. 3. The moment pregnancy is confirmed get FT4 and TSH done.
