Does haitus hernia of sliding type require surgery?

Q: My wife is detected with sliding hiatus hernia after endoscopy. We have the idea what is it but we want suggestions about its cure.

A:Most hiatus hernias which are of sliding type (this is the commonest variety) do not require surgery. An estimated 10% of the adult population in the US have a hiatal hernia. Only 5% of these patients have symptoms that are related to persistent GE reflux disease and this could be treated medically or surgically.
