Do raised TSH levels affect cataract surgery?
Q: My mother has to undergo cataract surgery. During blood tests related to thyroid, it was observed that her TSH was exceeding the normal limits i.e. 23.6. Physician has prescribed Thyronorm and delayed the surgery by 15 days. Does TSH factor play a vital role in surgery? Can it cause any complications during or after the surgery? The rest of the reports are normal.
A:Since the surgery is elective, it is best that thyroid levels come to normal and then the surgery be performed. Though hypothyroidism does not increase greatly the risk of surgery it is best not to take any extra chance.
