Child - headache

Q: I have a son aged about 5 years. For past two to three months, sometimes he complains of a headache. Sometimes he says it is on the forehead, sometimes on the side of the head. I would like to know, is it normal or is he playing games? If he is really having a problem, where and how can I get it checked?

A:Your 5 year old boy who comlains of headaches off and on for the past 3 months may have a real headache or he could be playing games too. First get his eyesight checked by an ophthalmologist. If that is all right then find out if he is enjoying school or not. Organic headaches are generally accompanied by vomiting and sometimes nausea. If the headache is severe and interferes with his normal activity and he is not distractable from his headache, then he needs to be seen by a paediatrician, who then decides the future course of action. Check out for sinusitis also.
