Can smoking lead to a difficulty in conceiving?

Q: My husband and my reports are all normal but still I have not conceived. I had a miscarriage six month back. My husband smokes, so could this be the reason for difficulty in conceiving? I got married 3 years back.

A:Cigarette smoking is injurious to health both active and passive (Inhalation of smoke indirectly, as could be in your case since your husband smokes and you are often close to him when he is smoking). Chronic smoking during pregnancy can lead to fetal malformations (deformities), small baby and even miscarriages. These phenomena are not common but can occur. In high risk pregnancies, like in your case, it is all the more important to avoid inhalation of smoke and your husband should cooperate. It is in the interest of the family.
