Can my wife take Letrozole for improving ovulation?

Q: My 26 years old wife had an ectopic pregnancy six months back, which was cured with Methotrexate injections. Later her fallopian tubes were checked and both were open. Now she has been given five days course of Letroz for ovulation stimulation. Can letrozole cause ectopic pregnancy?

A:Letrozole (sold under various brand names in India such as Letroz) is internationally approved for the treatment of breast cancer in post-menopausal women only. It is not to be used (contraindicated) in young pre-menopausal women all over the world including USA, UK, Australia, Japan, Canada and the entire Europe, etc. Both, the Canadian drug regulator and the innovator company Novartis, have warned gynaecologists all over the world never to misuse it for female infertility. Research on 150 pregnancies has shown that babies born to mothers who had consumed letrozole to increase fertility have suffered from bone malformations, cardiac stenosis and cancers. India is the only country where the drug is being prescribed for improving ovulation. The Drugs Controller General, India (DCGI) has referred the matter to an expert committee to advise whether its use for ovulation should be banned in India. Chronic studies show hyperplasia (enlargement) of the ovaries and uterine atrophy (diminution of the size) in rats administered the drug. In addition, ovarian follicular atrophy and uterine atrophy were observed in studies of female dogs administered the drug.
