Can my wife conceive with hypothyroidism?

Q: My wife was suffering hyperthyroidism. She was under treatment with Neomercazole-10 mg, thrice a day. After 3 month 15 days her test report revealed that her drug suppressed her problem to hypothyroidism. Her test report before medication: T3 – 462, T4 - 22.10, TSH - 0.02. After medication her test report: T3 – 28, T4 - 1.6, TSH >150. We are planning a baby now, so kindly suggest what to do? The dose of medicine has been reduced to half a tablet twice a day.

A:You have taken the correct drug what the same dose continued for longer time without repeat FT4 and TSH. The dose has to be reduced to 10 mg / day. If feeling very weak then Eltroxin 50 mcg can be added. The drug therapy is to be continued for 18 months, though the dose may vary from time to time. Regular monthly FT4 is to be done. Normally, during pregnancy this disease disappears to come back again after delivery. Get in touch with some Endocrinologist for proper treatment.
