Can my wife breast feed, while she is on treatment for typhoid?

Q: My wife has typhoid, which was confirmed by the Widal test. We have a 14-month-old son. Can my wife continue to breastfeed him?

A:It is a very serious issue for every parent. Your wife can continue to breastfeed, albeit at a lesser pace that before. The typhoid germs will NOT pass through the breast milk to the baby but some quantities of the antibiotics may do so. Hence the advise to feed in small quantities. Express the breast milk and discard it if you feel that the baby will not miss the breast milk. She can resume to breastfeed as soon as the antibiotics are over.
