Can my diabetic and hypertensive mother undergo fracture surgery safely?
Q: My mother is 70 years old. Few days back she fell down due to loss of balance and broke her left thigh bone and developed cracks in the other one. Doctor has advised to go for an operation to fix a metal plate/rod and cure the problem. But she is diabetic and her blood pressure is also high. Doctor is afraid of doing the operation. She cannot even stand or move. Since her BP & blood sugar is high, how can her problem be cured? Are there any modern facilities available in India, which can treat her with minimal risk & in lesser time?
A:Your mother definitely needs surgery so that the complications of a fracture, like bed-sores, urinary tract infection, pneumonia, so called fracture disease, can be avoided. It is possible to operate on her, provided diabetes and other problems are corrected rapidly with expert care. She can undergo the operation under regional anaesthesia without putting her to sleep and this is very safe for diabetics and elderly.
