Can I undergo Lasik during pregnancy?
Q: I am 30 years old and pregnant with my due date in 3 months. I am working in a software company and thinking of undergoing vision correction treatment using laser as I have a power of -9 and -8 in my eyes. Can you please suggest me what kind of laser treatment will be good for me? When can I undergo the treatment since I am pregnant? What precautions do I need to take before and after the treatment?
A:I normally don't recommend Lasik surgery for 3 reasons. 1. Results are unpredictable. 2. Chances of complications during surgery + risk of infections. 3. Later chances of defect reverting back as well as corneal thinning. However, results can be good in more than 50% of cases. Since your defect is significant, you can go ahead with this operation but 2 months or so after delivery of the baby. There are significant physical changes during pregnancy, so you should wait.
