Can I conceive after kidney removal?

Q: I am a 31 years old female and have a poorly functioning left kidney with uteropelvic junction obstruction. Depending on my kidney function I may be having the left kidney removed soon. If it is removed, then how long after the surgery should I wait to conceive and can I have a normal pregnancy?

A:Of course you can have a perfectly normal pregnancy and a normal delivery. The time you have to wait for a pregnancy will depend on whether the kidney is removed by laparoscopy or by the traditional method. The surgery scar has to heal well for giving strength to the abdominal wall, as the progressively expanding uterus needs room. Please consult your urologist and obstetrician. The waiting period is only for mechanical reasons; otherwise you are a normal woman.
